The Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) was created in 1991 by the Alabama State Bar Board of Commissioners to provide an organized vehicle through which lawyers can volunteer their services on a pro bono basis in civil matters to indigent citizens in their community. In the fall of 1995, the Birmingham Bar Association in conjunction with Legal Services of Metro Birmingham, Inc., now known as Legal Services Alabama, established the BVLP in Birmingham.
If you think you may need legal help, and want to know if you qualify, the "Get Help" page will tell you more.
If you would like to volunteer to help the VLP, the "Volunteer" page will tell you more about the process.
For information about the BVLP, including the current Board of Directors, see the "About" page.
A special thank you goes to all 621 volunteers in 2007...

DID YOU KNOW...
- That when you join the Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) you are only asked to accept 2 pro bono cases from the VLP per year;
- Only clients whose income level is equal to or below 125% of the federal poverty level are eligible for free legal services through the VLP;
- Only civil, non fee-generating cases are accepted by the VLP;
- Referrals are made by the VLP director to volunteer attorneys in areas of law that they themselves have selected;
- That currently 25% of Alabama attorneys, holding a regular license, participate in one of the four VLP programs in the state;
- That despite this outstanding level of participation, only 10% of the civil legal needs of Alabama's poor are being met?
