ASB Young Lawyer Section Disaster Legal Assistance Line

The Alabama State Bar Young Lawyer Section Disaster Legal Assistance Line is now open.  The number is 1-800-354-6154.  A FEMA intake will be done and cases will be referred to Young Lawyer Section volunteers for counsel and advice.

FEMA is in the state and providing disaster assistance to individuals.  To apply people need to go to the FEMA web site, http://www.fema.gov/.

2011 ABA Pro Bono Publico Award recipients - videos now online

The recipients of the 2011 ABA Pro Bono Publico Award were honored on August 8, 2011 at the Pro Bono Publico Awards Assembly Luncheon during the ABA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada. During the luncheon, videos about each recipient and their pro bono efforts were shown. The Pro Bono Institute has posted a nice video on YouTube of LSC President Jim Sandman talking about pro bono.

Particularly useful is his suggestions (which should carry a lot of weight with managing partners at large firms -- after all he used to play that role) for greater support for technology and marketing for legal aid programs as part of the firms' pro bono committment.  The video is below, jumping directly to that portion.

Disaster Relief Legal Assistance Clinics - Bessemer

The Birmingham Volunteer Lawyers Program and Bessemer Bar Association will be hosting Disaster Relief Legal Assistance Clinics for tornado victims at the Bessemer Justice Center, 1851 2nd Avenue North, Bessemer, Alabama 35020.

Clinic times are as follows:

Monday June 20th: 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Tuesday June 21st: 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Wednesday June 22nd: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Volunteer attorneys will be available to assist with insurance issues, FEMA applications, recovery of legal documents, landlord/tenant issues and contract issues.
